City puts science at the centre of World Children’s Day

The Community Arts & Culture Development (CACD) Department hosted more than a hundred young minds at the Cape Town Science Centre, in celebration of World Children’s Day today. Read more below:

It was a day of fun and learning for 115 children, aged between five and six, who attend Early Childhood Development Centres operated from CACD facilities.

Activities included a story-telling session with Libee the library mascot, a puppet show focusing on children's rights and responsibilities, as well as an opportunity to play at the LEGO Workshop station.

The main attraction, however, was all that is on offer at the Science Centre, and introducing the children to science and technology, and its critical role in building a sustainable future.

'I'm incredibly pleased that the City was able to put together this event. The more experiences that children are exposed to, the more layered their world view.  And there is no better mechanism than learning through play, particularly for our ECD learners. Human rights are the cornerstone of our democracy, and children's rights deserve the same treatment. It's important that they know what protections are in place for them, but similarly, I encourage adults to do the same and make sure that they too are championing the rights of our future leaders,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.
